Turning with the phobia

STOP HOMOPHOBIA Turning with the phobia

The 17 of May celebrates the International Day Against Homophobia, Lesbofobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

EDITORIAL GAYLES.TV.- The celebration of this day that aims to make a stop on the road and reflect on the situation of LGTBI phobia on the planet, is accompanied this year by the controversy of whether it is more correct to talk about Day against LGTBI phobia or Day against Homophobia. Each institution applies the scale according to its own ideological perspective. It seems to us that the official definition forgets about lesbophobia and includes it in the generic homophobia and no, it is not the same, basically because although “homo” is the Greek root of “equal, similar”, it is also a man in Latin, our native language and lesbophobia have very different implications. But it is that deep down it also seems to us that this may happen to be a sterile debate with which it is falling.

without homophobia

First of all, we should remember what "phobia" means. In its first definition, the RAE speaks of "Exaggerated aversion to someone or something" and in its specific psychiatric meaning: "Anguished and uncontrollable fear of certain acts, ideas, objects or situations, which is known to be absurd and approaches obsession" . A very superficial search in other sources gives similar results: "Emotional or psychological health disorder characterized by an intense and disproportionate fear of specific objects or situations." Or this other one, similar but that adds a very interesting nuance: "intense and irrational fear, of a sick nature, towards a person, a thing or a situation." Finally we read that "the different forms of phobias or fears hide, under the specificity in which they are manifested, the meaning that the subject gives to what causes fear".

In short, we are imprisoned, tortured, insulted, repressed, condemned, abused, belittled, marginalized, discriminated against, and even killed in the name of a phobia that by definition makes it clear that they are the sick, the homophobes! Well look how good! Because if phobia is an emotional or psychological disorder (...) of a sickly character (...) that hides the meaning that the subject confers to that which causes fear ", it is clear that the problem is with the homophobes and they project it on the LGTBI collective.

Countries where the death penalty for homosexuality is applied
Death penalty for homosexuality

It is difficult to understand once this is known that only 3 countries (and Spain is not counted among them) expressly prohibit treatments that seek to "redirect" or "correct" sexual orientation, "cure" homosexuality or that euphemism of offering help to " get out of homosexuality ”. The countries are Brazil, Ecuador and Malta, a minority that has understood what almost all psychiatric associations recognize and that is that this type of pseudo therapies is not only ineffective but also very harmful. Being responsible in some cases for deep depression, low self-esteem of the individual and even suicides.

We could be shuffling figures in this article and saying that in 2017 same-sex relationships are still illegal in 72 countries and that 12 of them is punishable by death. We could talk about Chechnya and the infamous concentration camps where homosexuals are tortured and murdered. Talk about blackmail, abuse, hypocrisy or bullying, but it is that ALL THAT WILL BE NEXT BEING UNTIL WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THE SICK ARE THEM. And yes, the capital letters are a shout, to see if we find out screams. To see if it is at least paradoxical for somebody that in the XXI century the 37% of member countries of the UN maintain punitive norms regarding the LGTBI collective.

In this Day against the LGBTI phobia we must be angry, we must shed light on the pathologies suffered by the homophobes and that prevent them from accepting the difference normally. Why the phobia is to mental health what allergy to the immune system: an exaggerated reaction that says more about who feels it than about who generates it. We must therefore urge our political representatives to apply the law and consider as a hate crime any type of conference, therapy, charlatanism or chichinabo that seeks to "cure" us in health. Let them heal what they are missing!
