A fantastic woman "A fantastic woman", a fantastic movie

Nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, "Una mujer fantàstica" puts us in the shoes of a woman marginalized due to her transsexual status

GAYLES.TV.- Last weekend "A fantastic woman" he got up with the Goya for Best Ibero-American Film confirming a successful track record that includes prizes as precious as the Silver Bear for best screenplay at the Berlinale, where he also picked up Teddy Award for best LGBT themed feature film. The list of recognitions and nominations that the Chilean film has harvested to date would be endless, but it is worth highlighting the Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, opting in both cases for Best Foreign Film.

The tape has been directed by Sebastián Leilo who has managed to capture the script in masterly images Gonzalo Maza. The film narrates the life of a transsexual woman played by Daniela Vega in a performance in which the actress largely mimics her character. And it is not casual because the director sought advice in Daniela before even considering the story of the film and his script is, in large part, inspired by it.

Marina, the protagonist of the film, works as a waitress and aspires to be a singer. She maintains a romantic relationship with Orlando, 20 years older than her, although the age difference does not prevent them from being in love and making plans for the future. But fate truncates his dreams when, after a night out, Orlando feels unwell and dies in the emergency room where Marina takes him. From here on, distrust and suspicions from family and doctors loom over Marina. They deny her presence at the funeral, kick her out of her home, investigate her, threaten her, and describe her identity as a complete aberration. Marina will then have to postpone her duel to fight for the right to be who she is, a special, strong, passionate woman…. fantastic.

The film starts as a clear favorite to win the Oscar on March 4. But beyond the fact that, finally, it is awarded the statuette or not, there is the prominence that the nomination and presence at the ceremony entails for the group of transsexual people.

Facing the topics, marginalization, discrimination and abuse, we are left with the three words that Daniela pronounced at the Goya ceremony: "Rebelliousness, resistance, love".
