NEWS.- The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), is an EU agency created to combat infectious diseases such as influenza, SARS and HIV. It regularly publishes guides with a series of recommendations after consulting with experts from all sectors involved.
Therefore, it is worth mentioning that the ECDC has just included and recommended the model of community intervention for the prevention of HIV developed by BCN Checkpoint. This model has been promoted by the NGO "NOMS-Hispanosida" in what affects the prevention of the AIDS virus in men who have sex with other men.
The ECDC explains, verbatim, that “in some European countries, community-based projects that provide professional services and support to the MSM community obtain a high degree of satisfaction from users and this guarantees better recruitment and monitoring of themselves ”and cites, specifically, as examples of this success BCN Checkpoint and the center that following its model has been put into operation in Athens (Greece).
BCN Checkpoint is a community HIV and STI screening center for gay men, other men who have sex with men and transgender women. He was a pioneer in Spain in the introduction of the rapid HIV test and has one of its distinctive features in innovation. Its model of community intervention has also been recommended by the WHO and, over the years, has inspired the creation of similar centers throughout Europe.
Ferran Pujol, BCN Checkpoint director explains, «For the entire BCN Checkpoint team it is a great satisfaction that the ECDC values and recognizes the effort invested in an innovative project that over time has proven highly effective, not only in terms of the high number of HIV cases diagnosed but also because in many cases they are diagnosed in a very early stage of infection ”and he adds,“ the ECDC recommendation confirms that the Checkpoint model plays an essential role in the global strategy to deal with HIV among MSM ”.
