Ronin has committed suicide

NEWS.- Until this weekend we did not know who Ronin was, we did not know his smile so clean, we had no idea what he was passionate about, what he liked to do, how he had fun. Sadly today that information has traveled the planet from end to end, because Ronin has committed suicide.

Precisely, what he enjoyed the most was what he suffered the most, the passion he felt encouraging the team of his school, the Folsom Middle School in California. Ronin Shimizu was the only boy in the cheerleader group and that constant bullying by his schoolmates who called him gay.

His parents had repeatedly denounced the taunts and harassment of his son 12 years, but in view of the seriousness of the events, they decided to remove him from school and continue with his teaching at home. But apparently that was not enough for the humiliations to cease and this week, Ronin could not take any more and decided to take his own life.

The school management has sent a letter to the parents of all students regretting what happened, showing dismay and ensuring that they will never stop working to give support to all students or teachers who need help to ensure their happy coexistence. Too late, for Ronin and his parents, too late even for the boys who will carry throughout their life with the death of Ronin in their conscience.

We will never dwell enough on the importance of educating for diversity, reinforcing the integrating messages and dismantling the reactionary arguments that are sometimes transmitted within the family. However, adolescence is a complicated age and the assumption of one's sexuality can become a serious problem when one lives in silence for fear of external pressure.

Today we want to mention here the project "It Gets Better", which we could translate as "Improved", whose objective is to prevent suicide among LGBTI youth using messages from LGBTI adults to convey that the lives of these teenagers will improve. It is necessary that this type of campaigns transcend and cross the walls of schools and institutes if we do not want to continue remembering smiles that are no longer there. In peace rest, Ronin.
