First transgender councilor in Peru

First transgender councilor in Peru

NEWS.- Last October 5, Luisa Revilla was elected councilor for the district of Esperanza de Trujillo. She is the first transsexual woman to hold such a high responsibility position in a Peruvian town.

It is important to highlight the importance of this information in a country like Peru where, the social situation of the LGTBI community, has left much to be desired to this day and has been the source of frequent conflicts. But it seems that little by little they are overcoming obstacles and producing advances in the rights of LGTBI people.

Peru does not legally recognize the union of people of the same sex, despite the fact that a survey of the month of April of this year revealed that the 33% of the population would be in favor of its legalization. In fact, the exit of the closet of Carlos Bruce, political legislator and principal promoter of the so-called Civil Union law for equality, opened a wide debate in Peruvian society. The result of this struggle is the inclusion of homosexuals in a recent National Plan for Human Rights.

Small steps towards the integration of the LGTBI community in a country whose strong Catholic tradition has been a hindrance that has hindered and retarded the comparison of Peru with other countries in Latin America in terms of LGTBI legislation.
