LAST HOUR.- The plenary session of the Madrid City Council on Wednesday July 22, has approved that the current Plaza Vázquez de Mella in the Chueca neighborhood of Madrid, now called Plaza de Pedro Zerolo in homage to the recently deceased socialist and LGBT activist. It has also been decided to raise in the same enclave a monument to all people who have been victims of discrimination and hatred because of their sexual orientation.
The vote, motivated by a proposal of the socialist municipal group, has had the favorable votes of PSOE, Now Madrid and Citizens and the votes against the PP, who through his councilor Pedro Corral, has argued to reject the proposal due to the management problems and the expense generated by citizens changes in the nomenclature of the Madrid street.
On the other hand the party partner of Zerolo and current councilor of the PSOE, Purification Causapié, has emphasized the "moral and historical obligation to leave memory in the city of the struggle for the freedom of the LGTB movement" and one way to do this is to honor the figure of who led this movement and was "the best of its representatives.
In the same vein, representatives of Ciudadanos and Ahora Madrid, whose mayor Celia Mayer, he recalled that this change is supported by the signed petition of 80.000 citizens who have given him support.
The decision was communicated through the official Twitter account of the Madrid City Council to the 9: 30 in the morning with the text: "The change of name of the current Plaza de Vázquez de Mella, in the Central District of Madrid, for the Plaza de Pedro Zerolo. "
