Leelah has not died in vain

NEWS.- Last January 5 we published a very sad news, which spoke of the suicide of Leelah Alcorn, a transsexual girl of 17 years who had been born as Josh Alcorn in Ohio. His parents, Christian evangelists, did not accept that Josh felt a girl trapped in the body of a boy. Not only did they refuse to support and listen to her, but they also forced her to attend "transgender conversion" therapies that ended her. The publication, which you can reread following the link "The suicide of Leelah Alcorn", has been seen by more than 33.000 people despite its extension, since it includes the suicide note that Leelah left written for posterity.

A few hours before leaving the residential neighborhood of Kings Mills and heading for Interstate 71 where he would end his life under the wheels of a truck, Leelah wrote a phrase in his Tumblr account that resonates as a slogan: "My death has to mean something". Leelah died hoping that one day transsexuals would be treated with the same rights as other human beings and that their feelings would be respected.

After his death the hashtag #LeelahAlcorn flooded the networks, but it is not enough, the cause of Leelah can not be limited to a hashtag that will survive for a while and be swallowed by the tide of novelty in the network. For this reason, the gamer community has decided to pay tribute by creating a series of games that question gender stereotypes. The choice is not casual because for Leelah the manga, the internet trans communities and videogames were his way of escape, he even dreamed of developing his own games.

The project, which has a charitable purpose to support organizations for transsexual and transgender rights, is named after #JamForLeelah, an initiative launched a month ago by Matt Boucher and Kara Jayne with a very clear idea, to educate in diversity playing. The result is a compilation of different games that together question a binary reality that limits us. We find ways that do not fit their molds, others that allow us to "customize" the appearance and identity of their characters, fantasies that guide us through a transition of gender and even trans girls that in dreams become magical characters.

Leelah will no longer be able to play those games, but the trans young people are still needing our help in order to live a dignified life. For them, by Leelah, let's play.
