Transsexuality is not a pathology

Trans * forms the Salut claims a new health model to the Generalitat

GAYLES.TV.- Platform Trans * forms the Salut, created by the collective of trans people and formed by 6 Catalan associations and by independent activists has demanded the Generalitat de Catalunya un new sanitary model for the trans collective They demand that "the 11 / 2014 law of the 10 of October be complied with", known as the anti LGTBIfòbia. It is the largest trans alliance established to date in the Catalan territory and was created with the intention of “denouncing and demanding the disappearance of the current pathologizing health model and giving way to a new comprehensive, respectful and sustainable health care model of the trans people«.

The complaint filed on June 14 highlights the lack of compliance with the law, mainly because it treats transsexuality as a pathology. Currently in Catalonia the Gender Identity Unit of the Hospital works under a biomedical paradigm based on the diagnosis of gender dysphoria, this means that it presupposes that trans persons suffer some kind of pathology. Access to health care is conditioned on this diagnosis, which according to some users does not respect the free development of the personality. It is a "one size fits all" model based on the binarism man-woman that leaves out other types of options within transsexuality and denies the possibility of developing identity freely.

The proposal foresees that from the unit Trànsit from Barcelona there is a deployment throughout the Catalan territory, with multidisciplinary teams that accompany trans people at an outpatient level. The new model foresees that trans people form part of the teams of these healthcare units as well as the direct involvement and supervision of the collective trans throughout the implementation and development process.
