GAYLES.TV.- France has withdrawn the shameful veto that prevents homosexuals from donating blood, thus joining the other 12 countries of the European Union, including Spain, where it is allowed. The permissiveness of donations by these countries has in no way led to an increase in the cases of HIV infection through blood transfusion.

The ban was in force since the year 1983, in a wave of panic by AIDS and with an absolute ignorance of the virus, its forms of contagion, risk groups, etc ... It is evident that the current situation is far from what was being lived 30 years ago, but it is clear that fear and prejudice remain underlying when it comes to making decisions.

The question is that the authorization to donate blood to homosexuals in France will be conditional on the fulfillment of a series of requirements. The donor must show that he / she has remained for 12 months without having sex with other men, that in the case of blood, if the donation is limited to plasma the period is reduced to 4 months. Which for the purposes supposes to de facto maintain a discrimination for the gay collective.

The announced measure has generated controversy even among the own defense groups of the LGTBI collective. Dominique Ganaye of the LGBT Federation has declared upon hearing the news that "It goes further than we expected, it is rather encouraging". For its part Mikäel Zenoude from Act Up-Paris denunciation that supposes a "flagrant inequality in the treatment given to the homosexuals".

The French authorities, in the face of criticism, claim that giving blood is not a right but an altruistic and voluntary decision of the donor that must always be subject to the safety of the recipient. The question would be, if we already know that contagion is not so much a question of collectives but of risk practices and if the increase in HIV transmission is occurring in both heterosexuals and homosexuals, Why keep pointing to the homosexual collective?  Why put conditions as absurd as abstinence which in fact implies an exclusion?

No, it is not enough, we can not celebrate this measure but denounce it because the change of laws must be backed by objective information and a previous change of mentalities.
