GAYLES.TV.- About a month ago we brought you a selection of photographs of vintage lesbian couples in the article «Vintage Lesbians«, Which were surprising for their freshness, spontaneity and impudence in front of the camera. If those rudimentary lenses captured the complicit glances of desire among women of several generations ago, today we bring you the photos of male lovers, of gay couples in love that span a century, from the legendary photo of Walt Whitman with his lover Peter Doyle dated around 1869, to the pair of bearded hands that could well be part of the protest movements of the 60 decade in the last century.
As in the collection of lesbian photos, the authorship of most of them is anonymous or their rights have expired and we can find them in the funds of Vikipedia Commons, some belong to collections of museums or universities of which you will find the reference next to the image.
In any case, it is worthwhile and moving to build a bridge with your eyes towards those men who not only had the courage to love each other at a time when it should not have been easy for them, but also wanted to leave testimony before the camera of their feelings.
For them goes our gratitude and our most heartfelt tribute.
And we started with the image we mentioned of a lovely couple of men holding hands while they read the press. It comes from the One National Gay & Lesbian Archives. Pat Rocco Papers " and it is not dated.
From the very bottom of the "One National Gay & Lesbian Archives" is this image of a clandestine kiss in one of the few places where it was safe, a photobooth booth. It is dated 1953 and the boy on the right is Joseph John Bertrund, Member of the Mattachine Society, an early gay organization, who also served in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
This anonymous couple of Americans posed around 1880 in an image that could well be of study. Origin: Vikipedia Commons.
In this photograph, also for study, the couple pose in a curious position that would surely have deserved censorship had it been published. It is dated 1875 and comes from Vikipedia Commons.
All the details in this 1880 image are overwhelmingly elegant, the gloved hands on the heart of the lover, the white handle of the cane and the hats resting one on another. Lucky to have the Vikipedia Commons studio portrait fund.
The protagonists of this image could well be our grandparents, but the discreet touch of the tips of their fingers and their glances give them away. It also comes from Vikipedia Common and is dated around 1890.
Less humorous showed this amusing pair of men, sitting one over the other in a clear and defiant attitude of pride. A love difficult to contain under appearances. Origin Vikipedia Commons.
A well-known photograph, that of Oscar Wilde with his lover Sir Alfred Douglas. The image is taken in 1893, before the trial that would end Oscar Wilde in prison, where he wrote the famous "De Profundis. Epistle in carcere et vinculis " destined to Sir Alfred. It also comes from Commons Vikipedia.
Perhaps this is one of the most curious images of the compilation, both because of the somewhat disheveled aspect of its protagonists and the fact that they do not seem to be posing in a studio. Well it could be a natural snapshot of anonymous characters. Closed on 1870 is in Vikipedia Commons.
A curious image that shows us two young and handsome firefighters holding hands in front of the target. Surely they would not have hesitated to offer "Firemen's Calendar"! It is signed by Vergenes VT around 1870 and comes from Vikipedia Commons.
And we end up with the beautiful image of the poet and his inspiration, Walt Whitman and his young lover Peter Doyle. The image was taken at 1869 and is preserved in the background of the "Ohio Wesleyan University. Bayley Collection ".
