In Seville an image of Saint Lucia is venerated that has turned out to be a San Juan

NEWS.- The restoration of a carving of the sixteenth century which is worshiped as if it were Saint Lucia, exposes a Saint John the Evangelist. The Sevillian restorer Benjamín Domínguez and the historian Jesús Porres, discovered that the image had the colors that are proper to a carving of San Juan, red cloak and green garments, but with feminine features and brown hair, which apparently had been gold. The inquiries led them to the file of Notarial Protocols of Seville, where they found the documentation of the order made to the Salamanca sculptor Juan Bautista Vázquez El Viejo, and thus confirmed that the altarpiece of which the carving was part was for a San Juan.

Apparently, the change was made in the 30s of last century during one of the many restorations that the piece has undergone. The reason was the establishment of the ONCE headquarters in the Sweet Child Jesus chapel, where the carving was located. Lacking an image of Saint Lucia, who is the patron saint of the blind, they decided to reuse the only one they had at hand, which turned out to be that of Saint John.

The current restoration must remove the glitter layers that accumulate the carving to expose the original polychromy. For the final decision is left on the identity of the transvestite image, whether to respect the current cult as St. Lucia or to retrieve the original as St. John.

If it is that since Rouco Varela is not in charge, until the saints come out of the closet!
