San Gabriel poster San Gabriel ... gay?

El San Gabriel of the painter's Christmas poster Manuel Peña scandalizes Sevillians and burns social networks

GAYLES.TV.- The Sevillana Association of Belenistas It was good to commission the elaboration of the poster announcing Christmas to the prestigious hyperrealist painter Manuel Peña. Little could imagine the commotion that would be organized in social networks when the work was presented last Saturday. In fact, half Sevilla he is in a state of shock without knowing yet if he should clap or tear his clothes.

San Gabriel Manuel Peña

Some, the most discreet, comment that they find it inappropriate, that it looks more like the announcement of a musical or an LGTBI show than the poster of an association of cribs. The majority thinks that it is a "fag," blasphemous and obscene. And what's the big fuss about? Well, the archangel San Gabriel, who appears with an expression of ecstasy on the poster, holds in his right hand a Giralda that emerges from the crotch and from the end of which sprouts a white lily symbol of virginity. It seems that Peña's intention has not been well interpreted by those who claim that it would be more typical of an advertisement for a gay sauna. The joke among many Sevillians is the phrase published on the Facebook page "Sunrise, which is no small thing" according to the clear phallic connotation of the thing: "Well, I think I'm going to get the Giralda."

In view of the scandal that has been mounted, Peña has come out in defense of his work arguing that it is a tribute to Murillo, the Sevillian painter whose birth is now 400 years. In ABC Sevilla has published an article justifying the controversial poster:  “I can only say that few have lowered their gaze and appreciated a Seville full of light surrounded by the five stars in the shape of ladybugs that Esperanza has on its chest and instead many have given free rein to their imagination to reach the conclusion of what the angel is not Angel, the Giralda is not Giralda and the lily is not lily".

Manuel Peña and his model

The truth is that the Christmas archangel does not clash at all with the rest of Manuel Peña's work of mixing religious imagery with the aesthetics of muscular masculine models that look more like gladiators than saints. And if we had any doubt we have cleared it to see the photo that the painter has posted on his Instagram account with whom he seems to have inspired the image of the archangel. What do I say that those of the nativity scenes already had to know what they were risking, right? What do you think?
