More than 300 women from journalism, culture and politics sign a manifesto that the violence and harassment suffered by feminists with public presence is considered torture

GAYLES.TV.-  More than 300 women from journalism, culture and politics, among other sectors, have signed a manifesto, which was published this Monday and condemns the attacks on feminist women with public presence in the form of insults, death threats, harassment or physical assaults. The manifesto comes days after the journalist and activist Irantzu Varela suffer aggression lesbophobic on the landing of his house.

The neighboring couple with whom he shares the landing were Varela for having left some cardboard to recycle next to the door of her apartment. At night the couple rang their bell and entered their house showing their anger and throwing various objects from the communicator's house to the ground. The couple's daughter was present during the assault. Later, on the landing, the man (who was the municipal architect of Basauri until he retired in 2019) punched him four times in the face. While beating her, he insulted her by calling her “lesbian fucking","degenerate"And"butch”. Varela denounced the attack on the Ertzaintza and recounted the attack on his Twitter account.

The signatories of the manifesto denounce that the attack on Varela It is not an isolated event but is framed in a moment in which «Aggressions against feminist women are multiplying and particularly those who for professional reasons have a constant public presence«. They emphasize that «the situation has become unbearable»And qualify the harassment that many suffer as a«torture«.

«Insults, death threats and harassment have become commonplace on social media. But not only there. It is also alarming how in recent times attacks, both verbal and physical, have jumped from the network to the street, reaching extremes such as the one suffered by Varela«, They assure. They have joined in this manifesto to denounce that «society and public institutions have normalized this torture, turning a crime into a mere habit«.

It's torture

MANIFESTO OF WOMEN WITH A PUBLIC PRESENCE

On December 13, 2020, a man hit feminism activist Irantzu Varela in the face after insulting her with expressions such as "fucking lesbian, you've infected us all, you stink." It happened on the landing of his own home.

The attacks on feminist women have multiplied to the point of making our lives unbearable, particularly those who, for professional reasons or because of our fight against machismo, have a constant public presence.

Insults, death threats and harassment have become commonplace on social media. But not only there. It is also alarming how in recent times attacks, both verbal and physical, have jumped from the network to the street, reaching extremes like the one suffered by Varela.

It is not a specific assault on one woman or another. It's about TORTURE.

The Royal Academy of the Language (RAE) offers the following meaning of TORTURE in its first meaning:

From lat. torture.
1. f. Serious physical or psychological pain inflicted on someone, with various methods and utensils, in order to obtain a confession from him, or as a means of PUNISHMENT.

The undersigned here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that the TORTURE to which we are subjected is a form of PUNISHMENT for our intervention in the public sphere.

The signatories here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that society and public institutions have normalized such TORTURE in such a way that they have turned a crime into a mere habit.

The signatories here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that the majority of the media seem to have decided that the TORTURE to which we are subjected lacks any informative interest or consideration in the criminal field.

The signatories here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that the majority of political parties avoid treating and regulating this TORTURE to women whose public presence seems to deserve regular aggression and harassment.

And we record it.
