Third genre in Nepal passports

Third genre in Nepal passports

NEWS.- Nepal recently prepared its first national census with a remarkable novelty, the official inclusion of a third option within the gender categories that citizens could choose. This modification paved the way for greater recognition of the rights of sexual and gender minorities and the consequent access to certain public services, especially health and legal, under equal conditions.

This week, another step has been taken to allow in the passports the existence of a third genre. Nepali people who do not feel identified with the male or female gender will be able to avail themselves of this third option without detriment to any of their fundamental rights. With this decision Nepal joins the India, Australia and New Zealand as countries that allow putting an "x" in the passport when marking sexual gender.

The paradox is that homosexuality is still illegal in the country despite the fact that seven years ago a court ruled that "homosexuality is not feigned behavior, but rather a natural phenomenon in the body of a person." With that ruling, the Nepalese justice decided to support and protect the rights of the LGTBI minority. Likewise, the State considered that "the sexual orientation of a person is something similar to having or not having a physical disability" so that the successive governments of Nepal should "respect and protect the rights of these sexual minorities."

Government sources say that the constitution that is being elaborated will take into account the LGBTI collectives thereby putting an end to the border legal situation in which thousands of Nepalese citizens now live.

This news adds to the general trend that is bringing to light the reality of transgender people, allowing a greater awareness of their situation and the recognition of their rights around the world.
