Miki Esparbé and Carlos Cuevas shoot in Barcelona the adaptation of the play «smiley«, by Guillem Clua
Carlos cuevas y Miki Esparbe will be the protagonists of «smiley«, the adaptation to a television series for Netflix of the play of the same name Guillem Clua. The actors, known for their participation in titles such as Merlí, Someone has to die, Kings of the Night or Malnazidos, will bring to life the characters of Alex and Bruno. The distribution is completed with Pepón Nieto, Meritxell Calvo, Giannina Fruttero, Eduardo Lloveras, Ruth Llopis and Ramon Pujol.
Few other details are known about this adaptation, which It could be the first Netflix production in Catalan -it already has films and series in this language in its catalog, but none of its own-. The producer, Absolute Minority, responsible for programs such as Polnia y It's Passant, would have asked the platform to respect the language of the original work and that it be available later dubbed or with subtitles, as is the case with any other title in its catalogue.
Premiered in Barcelona in 2012 and directed by Clua himself, «smiley» is one of the most successful works of recent National Literature Prize. It has had adaptations or tours in countries like Chile, Peru, Uruguay or Colombia, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Germany, Puerto Rico or the USA.
The legend of the red thread
A Japanese legend states that when two people are meant to be together, an invisible red thread tied to the little finger of the hand unites them from the day they are born. That thread is unbreakable and has the power to bind two people forever, no matter how far they are from each other, and no matter how different they seem to us. This is the premise on which it is based «smiley«.
Cuevas plays Álex, a young man who has just had a heartbreak. Alex had hopes for a boy who, after a few weeks, has made him a manual ghosting. And that doesn't sit well with him. He picks up the phone and prepares to ask for explanations with a voice message that will have the most unexpected consequences... because he ends up sending it by mistake to Bruno (Miki Esparbé), whom he doesn't know at all. That innocent first mistake is the first in a chain of events that will change the lives of Àlex and Bruno forever.
The two protagonists of this romantic comedy could not be more different. They make up a strange couple in which they only have in common that they are two men and that they have fallen in love. Their differences seem insurmountable, and their antagonistic personalities, but whether they like it or not, are united by that red thread, no matter how often they want to break it.
