The Generalitat de Catalunya guarantees assisted reproduction in public centers for lesbians and single women.
That is why today a great step has been taken universalize assisted reproduction treatments and extend them to all women in charge of public health and that step has given the Generalitat de Catalunya. To date, the 2011 protocol has been applied under the provisions of an 2006 Royal Decree on Assisted Reproduction, which regulated these practices in a way that excluded women who did not prove to have had heterosexual intercourse for at least one year without having conceived. That is to say, what was treated was the infertility leaving aside other reasons that prevented the conception as the fact of maintaining homosexual relations.
In an effort of coherence with the law against LGTB phobia approved by the Parliament of Catalonia in the 2014 Health Counselor Toni Comín, accompanied by members of feminist associations and LGTBI, announced the extension of this right to all women regardless of their clinical status, affective situation or their sexual orientation. Comín declared: "Whatever the demand, we will cover it. We are talking about a right. "
Currently in Catalonia there are 4 public centers that practice in vitro fertilization techniques and 8 those that apply artificial insemination. Given the foreseeable increase in demand for care, it has been considered to expand the number to about 20 centers and the possibility of launching a public gamete bank is not ruled out. "For the moment we will resolve the demand (for sperm) with the banks that we have now, but we will have to think about institutionalizing a public bank," said Comín.
Great news and a breakthrough for the rights of lesbians that marks the way forward for other state-level institutions. A question of justice that from now on will put an end to the shameful fact that the right to motherhood was marked by the purchasing power of people.
