"Queen Cristina, the woman who was king"

Queen Cristina "Queen Cristina, the woman who was king"

GAYLES.TV.-  This weekend comes to the screens of Spanish cinemas the expected tape "Queen Cristina, the woman who was king" of the Finnish filmmaker Mika Kaurismaki a co-production of Finland, Sweden, Germany and Canada shot only in 35 days and whose protagonist is the enigmatic, passionate and mystified Swedish monarch. Rejected by her mother and worshiped by a father who, by dying in war without other heirs, has Cristina crowned to the 6 years of age.

Educated as a prince in a dark Lutheran court, Cristina grows up surrounded by men convinced that her only option is to marry to offer an heir to the throne. But Cristina systematically refused to marry as she struggled to resist the uncontrollable passion she felt for her cousin and lady-in-waiting. Ebba Sparre with whom he apparently maintained a torrid relationship. Obviously, there are no documents that prove the true scope of that bond and history has not bequeathed us a conclusion as to whether it was a transgressor romance in full order or remained on the platter of platonic love.

Be that as it may, Kaurismaki's film, a story of passion and power, deepens this relationship while claiming the figure of the queen who put an end to the Thirty Years' War that faced Catholics and Protestants although the Swedish people remember her more as a traitor who renounced Protestantism professing the Catholic faith. But the truth is that Cristina was advanced in her time, cultured, passionate about the arts and sciences, a free thinker who advanced many of the ideals of feminism, someone who in the seventeenth century had the philosopher as a personal friend and intellectual reference Descartes.

I'm sweet
The comparison with another great 1933 movie that explored the figure of Cristina from Sweden is inevitable, especially for the group of lesbians who have in the image of Greta Garbo, that incarnated to the monarch, an iconic figure in spite of the censorship of the time prevented that it deepened in its condition of homosexual.

The role of what went down in history as "the virgin queen" is interpreted by the Swedish Malin Buska while the Canadian Sarah Gadon gives life to Countess Ebba Sparre. It is clear that Kaurismaki, current reference of auteur cinema in Europe, presents with this film a thesis against the unique thought and a lively defense of sexual freedom, culture and the feminine vision of history. Perhaps, to put some but, we could say that avoids portraying the excesses, arbitrariness and abuse that also characterized the Swedish monarch who emptied the public coffers to satisfy their many and extravagant desires.

So you know, happy cinema and happy weekend!
