Teachers and researchers from the Catalan education system join forces to demand comprehensive sexuality education with a gender perspective.
Before the reactionary wave which aims to roll back progress in education and rights, feminist teachers from all educational levels, educators and researchers in the field of education and gender studies, have decided to join together to demand a Comprehensive sexuality education with a gender, feminist, and intersectional perspective, on a platform for political action: Platform for Feminist Sexual Education.
Education is a transformative and fundamental tool to break with the Hate speech, stigmatization and violence. Therefore, this new platform of action is established to defend the rights of children and adolescents to an education that promotes respect, diversity and equality. "We will not back down from attempts to generate fear and mistrust around comprehensive sexuality education.", say its promoters.
This initiative calls on teachers, families, groups, AFAs, and anyone committed to a fair, inclusive and free education discrimination, because they add up. It also aims to join forces to ensure that education places the well-being and rights of children and adolescents at the center of education.
«Comprehensive sexuality education is not an option; it's a fundamental right. Children and adolescents deserve access to knowledge that provides them with the tools to live a life free from sexism. LGBTophobia and sexist violence, as well as a book of oppressive masculinities" they affirm from the .
The platform already has the support of more than 25 social entities who have joined the manifest, and urge the Department of Education and Vocational Training and the government of the Generalitat to comply with existing regulations through measures:
● That they promote courageous and committed educational policies with inclusion of the gender perspective in the curriculumThis involves reviewing educational materials and curricula for different areas, offering initial and ongoing teacher training, and rethinking the methodologies and organization of educational institutions, in compliance with Decree 175/2022 on education in Catalonia.
● Let them watch over him universal access to comprehensive sexuality education quality for all children and adolescents.
● That they intervene actively and institutionally against disinformation and reactionary, transphobic and hate speech, as well as breaking the myths surrounding sex education with a gender perspective.
● Let them put the childhood and adolescence at the center: Listening to and learning about their experiences is essential to ensuring that the curriculum is appropriate, relevant, and sensitive to their changing needs, concerns, and curiosities.
