Vitit Muntarbhorn maintains her position as an Independent Expert in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

GAYLES.TV.- With 84 votes in favor, 77 against and 17 abstentions, last Tuesday the ONU voted to keep the Thai Vitit Muntarbhorn, recently appointed an expert on LGBT rights, in his position. The vote was carried out as a result of a resolution presented by 54 African member countries, which proposed the suspension of the figure that Muntarbhorn occupied. These countries alleged that they did not understand very well the "legal basis" that supported Muntarbhorn's task because it could involve an intervention in internal matters of the member states that apparently fall within the competence of each country. Come on, as if the original role of the UN did not precisely involve the joint work of all nations to defend human rights!

The Ambassador of Botswana, Charles Ntwaagae, spoke on behalf of those 54 African countries and affirmed before the Commission of the General Assembly that the Council "should not deal with issues Relatedblank with sexual orientation and identity " because, as he explained, "these are notions that should not be linked to the international instruments that exist to protect human rights." As if sexuality and one's gender identity weren't an intrinsically human right!

Be that as it may, the shot has backfired (look where you) and Mr. Muntarbhorn will be able to continue for the next 3 years developing his task within the United Nations, which basically consists of traveling the world investigating the living conditions of LGTBI people in some countries and of course denouncing those administrations that violate their rights. In other words, work will not be lacking because of the 193 73 member countries have laws condemning homosexuality (curious that 77 votes in favor of eliminating the role of LGBT expert!) and of them 33 are African.

Director Human Rights Watch, Boris Dittrich he has been enormously satisfied with the result of the vote that will allow the Thai lawyer to continue with his task: "The vote of the Third Committee confirms that the right to be protected against violence and discrimination applies equally to LGTB people. It also respects the integrity of the Human Rights Council to ensure that mechanisms exist to protect rights not only in theory, but also in practice.."

In short, great news for LGTBI people around the world and a notice for sailors for all those leaders who sought impunity in their repressive practices against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals.
