Morocco: terror and shame

Femen in Morocco Morocco: terror and shame

EDITORIAL GAYLES.TV.-  A few days ago the violence and the most arbitrary and excessive brutality made rivers run not only in ink but also in blood in Morocco. Last March 25 a video taped with a mobile phone shook international consciences and called into question the concept of justice of the Moroccan authorities and the absolute helplessness with which LGTBI people survive in countries that boast of being civilized.

Imagine that you are quietly at home, in bed with your partner or lover or friend or whatever gives you the real win. Imagine then that a group of people, to call them somehow, they invade your home, they hit you, they insult you, they vex you and they take you to the street naked and bloodied. A full-blown lynching, let's go. The aggressors record the facts, upload them to the internet and the video goes viral. But it turns out that when they are in the middle of filming and already in the final sequence, the police arrive and annoy the party, stopping everyone. Yes, you read correctly, "to the whole world". Why the penal code in Morocco punishes homosexuality with penalties of up to 3 years of jail and the current reform underway of that law does not foresee precisely its elimination but rather its hardening. That is, justice was harder on the victims than on their aggressors. The world upside down!

video aggression gais MoroccoThe events happened in Beni Melal, in the center of the country and fortunately, after spending more than two weeks in detention, the two homosexual men have been released on parole, although they face three and four months in prison. The liberation took place thanks to pressure from various organizations and the awareness of the bad image that Morocco was giving to the international community. Although perhaps bad it is an euphemism and we should say infects an image, the worst ambassador that the North African country could have. But if all this were not sufficiently shameful, alarming and terrifying, in the background we witness with amazement the statements of certain organizations that proclaim themselves human rights defenders. We refer specifically to the "Karama Association for Human Rights" who appeared before the courts asking for clemency for the aggressors and more hard hand for homosexuals. Speechless.

homophobia MoroccoFortunately other groups, such as feminist "Femen" they have spoken in favor of the release of detainees and the repeal of article 489 of the penal code, which specifies the punishment for those individuals who "commit unnatural acts with individuals of the same sex." In a statement issued by the organization "Human Rights Watch", which sent an observer to the process, we read: "Assaulted, bloodied, taken naked to the streets and then sent to prison for his private life (…) This verdict will discourage victims from seeking justice and will increase the probability of homophobic crimes ”.

Above all this horror we have only the consolation to think that our keyboards are weapons and that every time we share or spread news like this, we load those weapons with our words against the unjust, against the homophobes, against the ruthless brutality of the savages and of the systems that protect them. And so on until we break all the shackles.
