Muslim and LGTBI, a tough road

EDITORIAL GAYLES.TV.-  Anyone who is a member of the LGBT community has suffered at times of discrimination, disdain or marginalization, at best unfortunate phrases from family members or colleagues, at the other extreme harassment and abuse. That is why we should be able to understand the harsh reality faced by people of Muslim faith who have a sexual orientation or a different gender identity to which their creed normally accepts.

Although it is not clear that the Koran explicitly condemns homosexuality, 76 countries, mostly Muslims, criminalize it and therefore apply corporal punishment, fines, imprisonment and up to seven of them the death penalty. It is not surprising then that leaving the closet in a Muslim setting supposes an act of authentic heroism. It is necessary to have a lot of courage to face at least the rejection of the family and the exclusion of your social environment, if not persecution, aggression and even death. Curiously, more and more Islamic spiritual leaders are betting that it can not be shown that there is a contradiction between the Islamic faith and the various sexual orientations, but at the moment there is no unanimity.

Obviously in those countries where the Islam it is the official religion, it is very difficult not to say it is practically impossible to come out of the closet, since religion is omnipresent in both public and private life and invades society with a conservative ideology that establishes discriminatory laws. With this premise, most homosexuals and transsexuals hide their condition, adopt acceptable behaviors and lives to survive and lock themselves in golden cabinets that castrate their hopes of living being who they are.

The situation of LGTBI Muslim people in Spain is not much better despite much more tolerant legislation and a general social acceptance. The problem is that their immediate environment is basically composed of Muslims, first or second generation immigrants with deep-seated prejudices regarding sexual diversity. This situation condemns these people to a double discrimination: the one they suffer because of their gender identity or their sexual orientation in their own community and that which is given to them by their creed given the growing Islamophobia prevailing in Spanish society.

Little by little, voices are raised, trying to cope with the obstacles of intolerance and prejudice that prevent them from being happy. But they also claim the compatibility between homosexuality and Islam and between transsexuality and Islam. People taking on LGBT activism are few and they face significant risks. Samir Bargachi  resides in Spain from the 6 years, is homosexual and Moroccan, directs Kifkif, a secular LGTB association that helps homosexuals and transsexuals in vulnerable situations due to their refugee or immigrant status. “There is a lot of Islamophobia in Spanish society in general and a lot of homophobia in the Muslim community. We are inside several closets", it states. "We want to promote a model of inclusive islam, to the European one, in which the norms of coexistence of the Spanish State are respected and demonstrate that the exclusion to the LGTB community is not Islamic. Nor do we have to renounce our religion because of our sexual orientation, "he adds.

This young man of 28 years has become a reference of the LGTBI fight not only in Spain, but also in other countries of Muslim majority and it has meant him to live with constant death threats.

We should all review our own prejudices, we should respect these people and accept not only their sexual diversity or their identity, but also the inalienable right to live their own creed.

  1. Being in Dubai a few days ago, it was impressive what I was invited to at Grindr. As everyone has the same needs. Do not accept out of fear. The same they meet secretly. You can not go against our nature.
