It is not even recognized by the vast majority of gays and lesbians to whom it restored the dignity and recognition of being healthy and balanced. Because he was the one who denied that homosexuality was a disease.
In fact of homosexuals were considered, until 1973, that they suffered "a sociopathic personality disturbance". But Spitzer insisted on the need to classify mental illnesses empirically, thus getting gays and lesbians off the list.
