NEWS.- Last Wednesday, 29 of October the flames of arson devoured the building that housed the oldest cinema in the Ukrainian capital. The Zhovten projection room, whose construction dates back to 1931, has suffered irreparable damage.
The moment the fire started, the French film about transvestism "Les nuits d'été" was being shown, by director Mario Fanfani, within the framework of the Molodist Festival, an international meeting created by the students of the Kiev State Student Institute and which had chosen Kiev in its 44 edition. According to statements by the Festival coordinator, Aleksey Chaschin, "The film was scarce 20 minutes projected, when the spectators of the rear rows began to alert of the smoke". The first speculations pointed to a young man had thrown a grenade from the rear rows causing chaos in the room. The arrest of two suspects has shed new light on the facts. Both confessed the act and are under police surveillance. In their statements admit to have thrown a smoke bomb with the intention of interrupting the projection, but not to burn the building. The assistants to the act declared not to have heard any cry or homophobic insult when the artifact was thrown into the room.
It is also speculated that the fire may be connected to private interests by expropriating the legendary local and that have generated a legal battle that lasts for months. The question of whether at the origin of the attack there are homophobic motives or if it was motivated by the strategic control of the space, has led LGTBI activists to concentrate at the gates of the Kiev City Hall to request a transparent investigation to determine the real causes of the attack.
