Finland today voted to approve egalitarian marriage. LAST MINUTE: APPROVED

NEWS.- The Finnish Parliament is voting today on a legislative change whereby same-sex unions would become legal in the country.

The text that currently regulates marital unions uses the formula "between a man and a woman" and what is going to be voted on is the change in the most neutral form "between two people".

It does not seem that the result is clear given that, although there are more parliamentarians favorable to the approval of the Law, 99 would be in favor and 86 against, 14 still have not decided their vote, which could tip the balance against in the worst case.

The discussion of the bill to regulate marriage between people of the same sex, has been possible thanks to a "Popular Initiative" promoted by the Tahdon2013 association, which managed in a single day to collect the signatures necessary for the House to be forced to revisit the issue. The Law requires 50.000 signatories and the document that was presented gathered 166.000 support in a country of 5 million inhabitants.

Finland is the only Nordic country where equal marriage has not yet been legalized despite the fact that the majority of its population would be in favor according to recent surveys. The factor that would be delaying the approval of the Law, is the pressure exerted in the Finnish Parliament by forces such as the National Coalition, Christian Democrats and the nationalist and populist party True Fineses, which has become the third political force, and which strongly opposes the legalization of same-sex marriage, as well as recognition of the rights of the LGBTI community.

Surely thousands of Finns are asking their neighbor Santa Claus today to advance Christmas and bring them the best gift, equal rights for all citizens. Let's cross your fingers and hope your wish is fulfilled.

LAST MINUTE: The Eduskunta (Finnish Parliament) approved this Friday the legalization of homosexual marriage by 105 votes in favor and 92 against. With this decision of the Eduskunta, Finland becomes the eighteenth country in the world that recognizes gay marriage, along with Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Spain, France, Holland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, United Kingdom, South Africa, Sweden and Uruguay. CONGRATULATIONS, FINLAND!
