Australian football against Brunei homophobia

NEWS.- The European subsidiary of the australian football league, AFL, has canceled the sponsorship agreement that he had established with Royal Brunei Airlines that supposed, among other advantages, the transport of players between Australia and Europe. This will lead to the announcement of the aforementioned company from the league final, one of the most followed sporting events around the world and to be held in two weeks in Australia.

The reason has been the laws issued by the Brunei sultanate against homosexuality and that include, among other measures, the stoning. The same Sultan of Brunei who has issued those laws, paradoxically, owns hotels in Los Angeles where he allows the entry of homosexual couples.

The decision has been taken after the campaign carried out by the platform All Out that denounced these facts and that managed to reunite 40.000 signatures and 1300 tuits that were sent to the official account of the AFL. It is not the first time that the Australian sport is positioned against homophobia, in fact the AFL was one of the 5 organizations representing major sports in Australia that, a few months ago, were united to launch a campaign of fight against all type of homofobia on the sport.

Australian football would be closer to rugby than European football, but it is considered the national sport in Australia, reason for which this type of positions have a tremendous repercussion. The answer is, in addition to a international complaint powerful, considerable economic damage to the millions of euros invested in an advertising campaign that will not be made public.

The decision of the AFL contrasts with the situation of the Spanish football league and the attitudes of some of its clubs. Without going any further, the two leading championship teams maintain sponsorship agreements with Qatar and with the Arab Emirates, where is persecuted and condemned to the members of collective LGTBI even with the death penalty. Spanish LGTBI organizations have campaigned in this sense that until today have been ignored by sports organizations.
