Visible transsexuals

EDITORIAL.- Today, March 31, Transsexual Visibility Day is celebrated and, beyond the claims, the feeling we have when trying to penetrate the transsexual reality is that we are tremendously ignorant. We feel like Alice falling into the rabbit hole, we discover that there is a diverse, complex, enigmatic and hidden world and that this world is not beyond the mirror, but lives with us, and shares our day to day. And not only do we ignore almost everything about its reality, but we also allow ourselves the luxury, as a society, to marginalize, classify, label and make symbolic gestures, change something so that basically nothing changes.

While it is true that in recent times has begun to talk about the issue, to publicly recognize the need to legislate, to depathologize, to protect especially transgender minors, it is no less true that we are in a blanket, we know almost nothing on how and why. We claim the right to reassign sex, ignoring that not everyone involved would want to be reassigned. Because as he says David Tello, president of the association Chrysallis in Catalonia, "There are girls with penis and children with vulva" and maybe they do not want to change that, but simply want to be an adulttranssexualitys who they are.

The fact that celebrities such as the current ones Wachowski sisters or who Bruce Jenner today turned into Caitlyin Jenner have made public their transsexuality, can lead us to the deception of simplifying an infinitely richer and more complex reality and finally anchoring ourselves in the binary concept that prevails in society: you are a man or you are a woman and if you are a transsexual person you will be a man in a woman's body or vice versa. Error. Of course there will be cases that are, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

The advances of the sixties in plastic surgery coupled with theories of John Money, who provided a pseudoscientific alibi for corrective surgery by claiming that gender identity was based on the sum of “genital upbringing”, destroyed the lives of thousands of people. When a baby was born with genitalia that were poorly defined or contradictory to its chromosome, corrective surgery provided a miraculous “solution”. But the maturing nature of the individual was not always in accordance with that arbitrary assignment, and it was too late to turn back. A high percentage of corrective operations removed underdeveloped penises, leaving female genitalia, then tried to educate the child as a girl when many times it turned out to be a boy.

In short, we know nothing, but our ignorance and our lack of certainty is our greatest wealth. We must try to know more, understand better and while limiting ourselves to the most basic: eradicate definitively corrective interventions at birth and advance the rights, recognition and integration of transgender children. Understand ultimately that transsexuality is not binary and begin to make visible the various transsexualities.
