International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
GAYLES.TV.- Since 1990 each May 17 Is celebrated the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia commemorating that that year the World Health Organization eliminated homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses. It is true that since then things have changed a lot and each time we are freer and we have more laws that protect us. But from there to real equality there is an abyss.
It does not take homosexuality to defend the rights LGTB + and support is rarely received in the struggle from outside the collective. It seems that politicians in Spain are putting the batteries (now they all want to appear in the photo with the rainbow flag) but the initiatives take time to be applied and there are too many victims on the way. In Madrid we have more than 62 homophobic attacks so far as 2016 is concerned. And in theory Spain is an advanced country in terms of rights and freedoms of the community.
According to report annual report of the International Association of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual and Intersex (ILGA) the number of countries that are betting on anti-gaz laws is growing. Norms that restrict freedom of expression and information related to sexual minorities as occurs in Russia, Algeria, Nigeria o Lithuania. Or as the controversial laws of North Carolina o Mississippi in which access to public toilets is difficult for transsexuals or services can be denied to gay couples, if religious reasons are mentioned. The study is alarming since the 45% of world population is against equal marriage and highlights that many citizens believe that homosexuality is a phenomenon of developed countries.
And maybe yes, maybe the imbalance is enormous between countries and cultures so diverse. But the serious thing is also the microhomophobia. What kills us is also the day to day, what we have internalized as normal. The serious thing is that your son is asked what girl he likes and they do not leave him other options. The serious thing is the bad jokes about ladybugs. The serious thing is to believe yourself liberal because you have a gay cousin without having counted how many heterosexual cousins you have. The serious thing is having to fill in the box in which it says "father" at school because no one has bothered to think that there are other types of families. The serious thing is that they believe that bisexuality is a phase. The serious thing is the ordeal that trans minors have to go through until they are understood. The serious thing is not realizing that society makes it a minority group.
