The right to sport of trans children, in the hands of the arbitrariness of sports federations

GAYLES.TV.- At International Day against LGTBIphobia in Sport (February 19) minors trans has little to celebrate. The lack of state legislation leaves an arbitrary panorama in which absurd situations occur such as that «a minor cannot compete in its category in Castilla y León and can do so in an Olympic Games". The State Federation of Lesbians, Gais, Trans and Bisexuals (FELGTB),  LGBTI Iberian Sports Group (ADI) and Sport and Diversity denounce that, at present, the right of childhood and adolescence Trans to freely access sports practice It depends on the will of the sports federations that decide whether or not a person can compete in the category corresponding to their gender.

Yesterday the Catalan Federation of Swimming (FCN) prevented a young transsexual from competing in the female category. A decision goes against article 14 of the Law to guarantee the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders and intersex and to eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, as the entities have denounced LGTB +. The specific law that «The public administrations of Catalonia must guarantee, together with the sports federations, the free participation of LGTBI people in competitions and the correct treatment of these people in sports facilities«.

Institutional Declaration

For this reason FELGTB, ADI and Sports and Diversity claim the urgent need for a LGTBI state law that equals the rights of the collective in all the Autonomous Communities and guarantees, among other aspects, that trans people can access sports competitions, recognizing their gender identity.

That's why they have articulated a Institutional Declaration in which they claim to end any expression of violence, whether physical or verbal, in sports areas, especially for issues related to sexual and gender diversity; equating public recognition and awards of women athletes with respect to men; and guarantee the sporting practice of trans and intersex people according to their gender identity, protecting their rights and privacy, and watching especially in the sport of literacy by a regulation that ensures the conditions of equality.
