GAYLES.TV.- The province of Buenos Aires has become the first to establish a minimum quota of jobs in the public sector for transgender people. This measure will mean that at least the 1% of the Buenos Aires state staff is covered by transsexual, transvestite or transgender people who meet the required suitability requirements and without having to change the documentation in the registry.
This decision is the result of a bill presented by the deputy Karina Nazabal of the Front for Victory who gave his support to the campaign organized by various LGTBI associations and entities. Its application is intended to eliminate the existing barriers to access to decent work for the trans community, historically violated in their social rights.
An official survey prepared by the INDEC in the year 2012 with the name "First 2012 trans population survey", evidenced a work situation of absolute precariousness and risk for the group. According to the aforementioned survey: "The 20% declared not to carry out any activity for which it obtains money. The remaining 80% expressed engaging in prostitution and other activities of precarious stability and non-formal work ".
The society marginalizes prostitutes and transsexuals when they are not accepted even by their own families to later find difficulties when it comes to making their way in life. Seven out of ten respondents said they were looking for another source of income and eight out of ten said that their trans identity made it difficult for them to search. Hence the importance that
entails the approval of measures of this type, since, in addition to providing access to decent employment, they increase the visibility of trans people, multiplying their possibilities of integration in society and contributing to their empowerment in any other field.
It would be desirable for the example of Buenos Aires to be followed not only by other municipalities and countries, but also by private enterprise and that, as a whole, we should all become aware of the enormous contribution that we as a group are willing to give our society.
