What is clear is that this motto is a paradigm of what was known as "Enlightened Despotism" which is equivalent to "I have the power, I command, I know what suits the people, I am generous with the people, but I do not count on the people when making decisions about what is best for them".
Well, that's exactly what he's done Cristina Cifuentes, President of the Community of Madrid in relation to subjects that directly affect the transsexual collective. And is that last Tuesday the Council of Government of the Community approved a draft of laws to give transsexuals part of the rights that belong to them as
l commitment acquired by Cifuentes.
On its website, the Community of Madrid advanced some points of the proposal by surprising both the opposition and the LGTBI associations, since at no time had they been consulted or counted on the contributions of the interested parties themselves. The fact has been widely criticized by various LGTBI groups that expected to participate in the elaboration of these laws in the same way that has been done in other autonomous communities before.
Although it is true that what is published on the Community's website contains a paragraph that states that “The preliminary draft of the Gender Identity Law that responds to an old demand of the LGTBI associative movement, will go through a wide process of consultation and dialogue with specialized professionals, sector entities, public administrations and political parties, in order to reach the maximum possible consensus ”. The question would be, if so Why have not they consulted before starting to write?
On the other hand, there would be the question that Cifuentes herself voted against the proposal for a comprehensive transsexuality law that the socialist opposition presented at the time. This fact has contributed to increasing suspicions regarding the president's proposal that not only does she decide on her own in a paternalistic way what is best for transsexual people, but that she most likely does so against her own convictions.
