ODA

LGBTI people are not sufficiently represented in Spanish movies and series, especially lesbian, bisexual and trans women.

According to the ODA report, LGBT + representation in Spanish audiovisual media is much higher in series than in films. There are only 14 major LGBT + roles in film, which represents 4,31% of the total number of characters while, including the series, a percentage of only 6,15% of LGBT + characters is reached. Most of these characters have an anecdotal presence in these fictions and women are underrepresented. That is why more non-stereotyped LGBT + protagonists are needed, who also represent the stories that heterosexual or cis characters star.

The report highlights that representation of trans * realities is clearly the most deficient: only 4 characters of all those analyzed are transgender and, in addition, only one is played by a transgender person, which means that they are characters counted, written and created from the vision of cisgender people, and interpreted by them as well, which completely skews true trans * stories.

At the same time it is found that there is a very low percentage of racialized characters who also have very stereotyped roles. All this gives meaning to the work that ODA has started as an Observatory for the Diversity of Audiovisual Media in Spain.

It's torture

MANIFESTO OF WOMEN WITH A PUBLIC PRESENCE

On December 13, 2020, a man hit feminism activist Irantzu Varela in the face after insulting her with expressions such as "fucking lesbian, you've infected us all, you stink." It happened on the landing of his own home.

The attacks on feminist women have multiplied to the point of making our lives unbearable, particularly those who, for professional reasons or because of our fight against machismo, have a constant public presence.

Insults, death threats and harassment have become commonplace on social media. But not only there. It is also alarming how in recent times attacks, both verbal and physical, have jumped from the network to the street, reaching extremes like the one suffered by Varela.

It is not a specific assault on one woman or another. It's about TORTURE.

The Royal Academy of the Language (RAE) offers the following meaning of TORTURE in its first meaning:

From lat. torture.
1. f. Serious physical or psychological pain inflicted on someone, with various methods and utensils, in order to obtain a confession from him, or as a means of PUNISHMENT.

The undersigned here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that the TORTURE to which we are subjected is a form of PUNISHMENT for our intervention in the public sphere.

The signatories here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that society and public institutions have normalized such TORTURE in such a way that they have turned a crime into a mere habit.

The signatories here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that the majority of the media seem to have decided that the TORTURE to which we are subjected lacks any informative interest or consideration in the criminal field.

The signatories here, on behalf of many others, want to denounce that the majority of political parties avoid treating and regulating this TORTURE to women whose public presence seems to deserve regular aggression and harassment.

And we record it.

Ellen Page transitions to Elliot: "I'm trans and my pronoun is him"

Read the entire statement that Elliot Page has posted on Twitter

GAYLES.TV.- Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, has announced on social media that she is transgender. Through a statement, the actor nominated for Oscar and protagonist of The Umbrella Academy has written this text:

Hello friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he / they and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to write this. To be here. Having reached this point in my life.

I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me on this journey. I can't express how significant it is to be able to love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self. I am infinitely inspired by the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity, and your tireless work to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I offer whatever support I can and will continue to fight for a more loving and equal society.

I also ask for patience. My happiness is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is that despite how happy I feel and even knowing the privilege I have, I feel afraid. I am afraid of invasion, hatred, "jokes" and violence. To be clear, I'm not trying to turn off this moment that is one of happiness and one that I celebrate, but I do want to mention the big picture. The statistics are impressive. Discrimination against trans people is persistent, insidious, and cruel, with dire consequences. Only in the year 2020 the murders of 40 trans people have been reported, most of whom were trans women of black or Latino origin. To political leaders working to criminalize public health for trans people and deny our right to exist and to all those with a massive platform who continue to spit hostility towards the trans community: you have blood on your hands. You unleash a fury of hatred that falls on the shoulders of the trans community, a community in which 40% of trans adults report having attempted suicide. It's enough. Nobody is "canceling" you, you are hurting people. I am one of those people and I will not keep silent in the face of their attacks.

I love being trans. And I love being queer. And the closer I get to myself and embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I get richer. To all trans people who deal with bullying, self-hatred, abuse, and threats of violence every day: I see you, love you, and will do whatever I can to make this world a better place.

Thanks for reading this.

All my Love,

Elliot

The RAE incorporates the pronoun "elle" in its observatory of words

Inclusive language makes its way into the RAE's word observatory

GAYLES.TV.- Languages are alive and mutating. They are not something static and immovable, they have to adapt to new realities. The use of inclusive language has drawn the attention of Observatory of words for the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE). Historically, this institution had been reluctant to incorporate the use of more inclusive words, but it seems that a gap has opened.

One of the last linguistic movements The one that has generated the most controversy and debate is that of inclusive language, which proposes using the letter "E" as a replacement for "O" as a vowel that encompasses all genders. The RAE, founded in 1713, recently included in its observatory the finished "elle", which he defines as “a resource created and promoted in certain areas to refer to those who may not feel identified with either of the two traditionally existing genres. Its use is not widespread or established".

Living tongue

The RAE incorporates the pronoun "elle" in its observatory of wordsThis is an important milestone because two years ago the same institution rejected the use of expressions such as “todxs "," todes "or" tod @ s”. Although the presence of a term by the Observatory of words It does not imply that the institution accepts its use, it is good news and indicates that there is a linguistic interest in it. And is that the Observatory is a space that "provides information on words (or meanings of words) and expressions that currently do not appear in the dictionary".

Current laws in many countries aim to exercise the right to identity from self-determination. But these regulations continue to offer sex and gender markers from a binary spectrum: female / male and female / male. He Observatory for the RAE He has not only made this approach to inclusive language with the pronoun "elle." He has also included in his list of words to check «transphobia "and" transphobic / or«. This is an advance for the linguistic universe of sexual diversity, although it is still necessary for the body to recognize these terms.

October 26: International Intersex Visibility Day

La World Health Organization estimates that between a 0,05% and an 1,7% of the population is born with intersex traits

GAYLES.TV.- El 26th October 1996 in the city of Boston,Massachusetts, about thirty people met with the slogan «Enough of mutilations" before the American Academy of Pediatricians. Led by activists Morgan Holmes and Max Beck of the IIntersex Society of North America (ISNA), and accompanied by other organizations, they asked for the rights to decide on their bodies. Since then, October 26 he became the International Intersex Visibility Day with the aim of informing, sensitizing and raising awareness about problems, prejudices and the violation of rights.

October 26: International Intersex Awareness DayThe people intersex are born with sexual characteristics (such as genitalia, gonads and chromosome patterns) that do not correspond to the typical binary notions on male or female bodies. Intersex is a term used to describe a wide range of natural variations in the body. In some cases, intersex traits are visible at birth, while in others they do not manifest until puberty. Some chromosomal variations of intersex people may not be physically visible at all.

La World Health Organization estimates that between a 0,05% and an 1,7% of the population is born with intersex traits; the percentage representing the upper threshold is similar to the number of people with red hair. Being intersex is related to the biological characteristics of sex. It is not a pathology or a malformation. Neither is it a gender identity or a sexual orientation. An intersex person can be heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or asexual, and can identify as female, male, both, or neither.

Childhood and intersex

The practice of subjecting intersex boys and girls to surgical and other procedures in order to make their appearance conform to binary stereotypes of sex has become commonplace. These procedures, which are often irreversible, can cause permanent infertility, pain, incontinence, loss of sexual sensitivity, and lifelong mental suffering, including depression. In addition, they are usually carried out without the full, free and informed consent of the person affected, who is usually too young to participate in decision-making, and may violate their rights to physical integrity, not to be subjected to torture or ill-treatment and not be subjected to harmful practices.

Intersex people are often subjected to discrimination and abuse if they are found to be inconsistent with gender norms. Laws against discrimination do not usually prohibit discrimination against intersex people, which leaves them in a situation of vulnerability to discriminatory practices in different contexts, such as access to health services, education, public services, employment or sports.
