Between 150 and 200 students rebuked the teacher who had asked them to stop a mobilization at the time of the patio

A homophobic group attack on a high school teacher from the Institute Les Alfàbegues from the Valencian town of Bétera, which occurred last week, has ended with the expulsion of a dozen students, a figure that may be higher depending on the conclusions of the investigation initiated by the center.

As the Valencian public television has advanced À Punt, last Wednesday two students went out to the patio with an LGTBIQ+ flag, and other young people were added until the center asked to end the spontaneous mobilization that, according to these sources, disturbed normality in a patio where a thousand people go out every day students.

The next day, other young people decided to go to the patio with flags of Spain. It is at this point when, given the growing tension, a teacher asked the young people that this mobilization also be diluted. In response to the teacher's request, between 150 and 200 students began to rebuke him. During the attack, sandwiches were thrown at the teacher, who received hair-pulling and derogatory shouting about his sexual condition.

«In life I would have imagined that in an educational center, where we teach values, they could attack me with the hatred I felt. I thought it was impossible", has said Michael Alvarez, the teacher attacked.

Manifesto of support

The center has summoned this Wednesday to an extraordinary cloister and among the students a manifesto of support for the attacked teacher is being prepared. The Ministry of Education has activated the Plan for the Prevention of Violence and the Promotion of Coexistence (Previ) for the incidents while the students are working on a manifesto in support of the attacked teacher. The case is being investigated by the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office.

El Consistory highlights that from the council of Equality it is working «actively and jointly" with the IES Les Alfabegues to carry out transversal co-educational proposals, as well as measures to prevent LGBTophobia and the gender violence that they have underway in the center itself, such as the workshop “Diversity is normal”. The Municipality of Betera makes the necessary municipal resources available to teaching staff.

condemnation of assault

El Union of Education Workers of the Valencian Country has issued a statement in which it expresses its support for the center and makes its legal services available to the victim, «as well as any type of help to the management team and the entire school community in general to fight against attacks on educational centers«. The union also points to the political background of the aggression: «It is no coincidence that it has occurred in a political context such as the current one, with the rise of a certain ideology that encourages these behaviors and does not respect any differential fact.
